My Story, from Event Planner to Family Photographer... Picking up my camera

Hi, I’m Nikki — a thirty-something mum of two, living my best life here in beautiful Buckinghamshire. Most days you’ll find me and my husband running around after our two girls, walking our lab through the countryside, or enjoying a well-earned glass of wine with friends after bedtime chaos. I’m also the face behind a growing newborn and family photography business in Buckinghamshire, and my journey to becoming a photographer is one that started long before I ever picked up a camera.

From Event Planner to Buckinghamshire Family Photographer

At 21, I left university and stepped straight into the world of event planning — and what a journey it’s been. My career took me to some of the most stunning historic venues in the UK, from breathtaking English Heritage stately homes to the iconic Natural History Museum.

Working in these incredible spaces, I was constantly surrounded by photographers. I loved watching how they worked — quietly reading the room, anticipating emotion, and capturing fleeting moments for families to treasure forever.

Even then, I remember thinking, I should be doing that.

I didn’t realise it at the time, but those years were shaping my eye for storytelling — something that now defines my Buckinghamshire newborn and family photography style.

How Motherhood Inspired My Photography Journey

After having my first baby, my husband bought me a camera. I genuinely believed I could just pick it up and instantly create beautiful images… how wrong I was.

After a few failed attempts, I tucked the camera away and convinced myself it had been a waste of money.

But when I went on maternity leave with my second baby, everything changed.

With my return-to-work date approaching, I felt a pull I couldn’t ignore. The creative itch was still there — stronger than ever. I didn’t want to look back in ten years and wonder what if.

As mums, we know just how quickly babies grow. The tiny fingers, the sleepy stretches, the way they fit perfectly in your arms — these moments are gone before we realise. That realisation is what fuels my passion now as a newborn photographer in Buckinghamshire.

The Moment Everything Changed

My cousin introduced me to Caroline, aka Caroline Acaster Photography, a full-time photographer who had recently opened her own studio. After a flurry of voice notes, I went to visit her in October — and that was it. The spark was instant. I saw a life where creativity and motherhood could exist together. A life where I could be present for my children while helping other families preserve their own memories.

I went home, picked up my camera — and this time, I knew I wasn’t turning back.

My photography journey had officially begun.

My very first lesson?

Focus.
